For many people, Valentine’s Day is a time of love and romance. It’s that special time of year when they say “love is in the air.” But for some people, Valentine’s Day doesn’t have the same allure. If you found yourself saying the word “yuck” out loud when you read the first two sentences of this post then you’re probably one of those people. But don’t worry! The MetroLyrics Blog is here to help. Here’s our list of Top 10 Anti-Valentine’s Day Songs to help deal with the Valentine’s Day blues.
10. “I Will Survive” – Gloria Gaynor
We all know the feeling immediately after getting dumped — and if you don’t, consider yourself lucky. It sucks. Luckily Gloria Gaynor knows what it takes to get over it. “I Will Survive” is one of the all time greatest empowerment anthems, and might just be the right thing for your Anti-Valentine’s Day.
9. “What Goes Around…/…Comes Around (Interlude)” – Justin Timblerake
Here’s another one for the recently scorned. This song, courtesy of Justin Timberlake, is directed at an ex who thought she could get away with cheating. Rumour has it, Justin composed the song after a nasty break with then girlfriend Britney Spears, leading to a tabloid frenzy. So if you and Justin are in a similar situation, at least be thankful that yours isn’t being plastered all over the gossip magazine pages.
8. “I Hate Myself For Loving You” – Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Sometimes you just can’t control who you love. But that doesn’t mean you have to like it. Take Joan Jett for example. She was crushing on someone who was determined to mess around behind her back and make her look like a fool. But rather than direct her hate at that person, she blamed herself and got better from it. Of course, this strategy isn’t for everyone. But it does say a lot about the person that’s messing around on you when they aren’t even worth your hatred.
7. “Love Is Hell” – Ryan Adams
Ryan Adams knows the power of a metaphor, and with this one he gets straight to the point. The guy must have been seriously suffering when he wrote this track. It’s pretty clear that the “love is hell” metaphor is a bit of an exaggeration. But hopefully the song will make you think “hey, at least I’m not Ryan Adams” every time you’re feeling down in the dumps about love.
6. “What’s Love Got To Do With It” – Tina Turner
If you sense a touch of sarcasm in Tina Turner’s lyrics for “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” we don’t blame you. Who could really take the words “who needs a heart when a heart can be broken” seriously. That said, Tina’s classic lyric “what’s love but a second hand emotion” should be the perfect mantra for all of you anti-Valentiners out there.
5. “I Don’t Need A Man” – Pussycat Dolls
Sorry, guys, but this one’s for the ladies. If you’re having trouble letting go of some no good guy, take notes while listening to the Pussycat Dolls anthem of independence, “I Don’t Need A Man.” The PCDs don’t need a man to make them happy, so neither should you. If you find yourself solo dancing in front of the mirror to this song on February 14th, we won’t blame you one bit.
4. “50 Ways To Leave Your Lover” – Paul Simon
As one of the most talented song writers of all time, Paul Simon tells the story of ditching the things in your life that drag you down, and specifically your lover. So if you’re having a tough time getting out of an unhappy relationship, take comfort in the fact that there are at least 50 ways of going about doing it. Well, according to Paul Simon at least.
3. “Song For The Dumped” – Ben Folds Five
Many artists choose to dedicate their songs with hidden metaphors or by using the album liner. Ben Folds decided to take the opposite route with his “Song For The Dumped.” This one’s for those of us that are SERIOUSLY BITTER about being dumped. Ben’s lyrics are blunt, to say the least. So for those of you that have been dumped near February 14th, we’ve got a feeling that his straight forward approach will be appreciated.
If you’re flying solo at this time of year, it goes without saying that Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” is a must-have for your Anti-Valentine’s Day playlist. And guys, don’t be discouraged by the fact that the song has the word “ladies” in the title. You can strut your stuff to Beyonce’s classic anthem too. Take these guys for example. Or this guy. Yeah, you get the point.
1. “Love Stinks” – J. Geils Band
Recorded by the J. Geils band and later made even more famous by Adam Sandler’s character in the film The Wedding Singer, the song “Love Stinks” is our #1 song for this year’s Anti-Valentine’s Day. The lyrics to this track are so perfect for everyone celebrating Anti-Valentine’s Day that we fully support a February 14th group sing-along. The words “love stinks” come up 26 times in the song. 26 times! Now that’s what I call hammering your point home.
