If you’ve got even a little fondness for folk music and are unaware of the name Ray LaMontagne, you need to get familiar. Known for his smooth, soulful, raspy croon, LaMontagne has been releasing albums since 2004. In that time, he’s produced four quality LPs to his name, Acre of Land, Trouble, Till the Sun Turns Black and Gossip in the Grain. Judging by the first single off of his 5th release, God Willin’ & The Creek Don’t Rise (due August 17th), LaMontagne, with the help of his backing band, The Pariah Dogs, appears poised to add another gem to his impressive catalog.

The first single, entitled, “Beg Steal or Borrow,” was released earlier this month. It’s classic LaMontagne, with a subtle country twist. The song tells the story of a young man feeling trapped inside the small town that he was born into. Yet, his powerful ambition is so strong, he’ll do almost anything to get out rather than settle for the life he has. It’s a beautiful track that even bares a slight resemblance to the sounds of an early Joni Mitchell – which isn’t a small compliment. You can have a listen to it below via YouTube, and then head to iTunes or Amazon and grab it to go if you like it. Keep your eyes and ears open for the album dropping in August. In the meantime, check out his official Website and MySpace page for more material.
