So, being in NYC last week, I made the rounds on some of the late night TV programs. Here’s some of the fresh music I stumbled upon.
First up was The Late Show with David Letterman. As you might know, Dave has one of the best accompanying bands in TV, period, in Paul Shaffer and the CBS Orchestra. It’s not often you see those guys get upstaged, but Tuesday was one of those occasions. Dave’s guest was Trombone Shorty and Orleans Avenue. Trombone Shorty has some serious chops… on the trombone, of course. Anyways, check out the kid’s MySpace or official web site for more of the goods.
The next night I headed to a taping of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which, musically, was just as solid. First off, Jimmy has the luxury of having one of the great hip-hop groups of all time, The Roots, acting as his house band. To match that, the multi-talented Macy Gray was the musical act for the night’s episode. She’s got an album out, called The Sellout. I haven’t heard it yet, but the single that I heard on Fallon was pretty solid. It’s called “Kissed It,” and it struck me as being something different from what I’ve heard from her in the past. I’d definitely think about picking the album up based on the song alone.
Check out the performance by Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue below. Also, you can check out his MySpace or official web site while you’re at it.
